Colibri – Organic Motion Hummingbird Sculpture by Derek Hugger
660
When you want to simulate the beauty of a hummingbird in flight go directly to the source...Mother Nature. That's exactly what Derek Hugger did when he designed Colibri. Colibri is a wooden kinetic sculpture that mimics the motion of a hovering hummingbird. Slow motion videos were used to develop 3D animations which in turn were utilized to generate true-to-life cam profiles and linkages. Each movement, from the flaring tail to the beating wings, has been mechanized. There's so many intricate and stunning moving parts that choosing where to look might be the ultimate challenge.
Factoid:
Hummingbirds have evolved smaller feet to be lighter for more efficient flying. These small feet don't allow them to walk or hop. They can only scoot sideways while they are perched.
