Dr. Suess’s Collection of Unorthodox Taxidermy

200

When I first saw this collection of strange animals I thought someone had taken the animals of Dr. Suess and mounted physical versions of them. I was surprised to learn that it was the beloved doctor himself who had created this Collection of Unorthodox Taxidermy during his evening free time. That brought my love for this series to an all new level of respect and adoration. Dr. Suess's father worked as the superintendent of the Springfield Zoo and would send his son pieces of deceased animals (exotic beaks, horns, antlers, etc). These actual animal parts were given new life as part of Dr. Suess's bizarre taxidermy sculptures. Incredibly, during the 1930s he created a total of 17 sculptures which still remain today.

Factoid: An orangutan at the San Diego Zoo named Ken Allen outwitted the zookeepers and escaped multiple times even when they posed as visitors. During his escapes Ken would “peacefully stroll around the zoo looking at other animals.”
